Tip of the Week: Try Out These Tricks Next Time You Browse the Web

Your business relies on the Internet in order to accomplish a number of goals, including finding out information about your competition, accessing applications stored in the cloud, and simply staying in touch with your various contacts. However, there’s always room for improvement, and even some of the most simple tips can be a considerable help in achieving your day-to-day goals. Here are three ways you can make better use of your Internet browser.

Fully Use Tabbed Browsing
What do you do when you find an article you want to read, but don’t want to leave your current web page? In cases like this, all you have to do is right-click on the link and open the link in a new tab. This keeps you from disrupting your current state of productivity by navigating away from the link. Furthermore, you can simply hold down the Ctrl key and click on the link and the same result occurs.

Forget the Beginning of a URL
Let’s say that you’re trying to get to a certain website, but you can’t remember if it’s encrypted (HTTPS) or not (HTTP). It actually doesn’t matter so much for this because you can simply enter in the URL and most web browsers will be able to identify where you want to go. However, it can be a major deal if you’re trying to navigate to a website that’s supposed to have encryption, like an online shop. You never want to enter any personal or sensitive information into a form on a website that doesn’t have encryption.

Move Quickly Through Forms on a Web Page
Did you know that you can just hit Tab to move from one field in a form to another while on a web page? This can be helpful if there are many fields in the online form that must be entered, and you would otherwise have to click on each individual one to enter in the information. Furthermore, you can use Shift + Tab to go back to the previous field, just in case you missed one.

Take Full Advantage of Web Browser Shortcuts
Many of the keyboard shortcuts that work in Microsoft Word will also work in most web browsers, including those that let you cut, copy, and paste text. However, there are a couple of special ones that you’ll want to use in order to get the most out of your web browser:

  • Use F5 or Ctrl+R to refresh the web page.
  • Use Ctrl+F to open the Find function, which will let you search a web page for specific text.
  • Use Ctrl+B to open the Bookmarks function.
  • Press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys to make the text bigger or smaller.
